How to play No-Limit Hold'em

The world's favourite poker game. Two private cards each, five shared cards, and you make the best five-card hand from any seven.

A hand, step by step

  1. The two players to the left of the dealer button post the small and big blind.
  2. Everyone gets two private cards. Pre-flop betting starts with the player left of the big blind: fold, call or raise.
  3. The flop: three shared cards face up. Betting starts with the first player still in, left of the button.
  4. The turn: a fourth shared card, then a betting round.
  5. The river: a fifth shared card, then the last betting round.
  6. Showdown: use any combination of your two cards and the five on the board (even all five board cards). The best hand wins the pot; equal hands split it.

Betting

No limit: you can bet or raise any amount up to everything in front of you (all-in). A raise must be at least the size of the last bet or raise.

Which hand wins

Standard poker hands, best to worst: royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, pair, high card.

Tips

  • Position matters: acting after others tells you more.
  • Fold more hands than you play, especially early on.
