How to play Pot-Limit Omaha

Like Hold'em with four private cards, but you must use exactly two of them with exactly three from the board.

A hand, step by step

  1. The two players to the left of the dealer button post the small and big blind.
  2. Everyone gets four private cards. Pre-flop betting starts with the player left of the big blind: fold, call or raise.
  3. The flop: three shared cards face up. Betting starts with the first player still in, left of the button.
  4. The turn: a fourth shared card, then a betting round.
  5. The river: a fifth shared card, then the last betting round.
  6. Showdown: you must use exactly two of your cards and exactly three from the board. The best hand wins the pot; equal hands split it.

Betting

Pot limit: the most you can bet or raise is the size of the pot (counting your call first).

Which hand wins

Standard poker hands, best to worst: royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, pair, high card.

Tips

  • Four of a suit on the board doesn't give you a flush unless you hold two of that suit.
  • Hands run much closer than in Hold'em: draw to the best hand (the "nuts").
