How to play Badugi
A four-card lowball draw game: you want four low cards of four different suits.
A hand, step by step
- The two players to the left of the button post the small and big blind.
- Everyone gets 4 private cards. There are no shared cards. Betting starts left of the big blind.
- The first draw: starting left of the button, each player throws away any number of cards (or none: "stand pat") and gets new ones. Everyone sees how many cards each player drew.
- A betting round, then a second draw, another betting round and a third draw.
- A last betting round, then the showdown: the best Badugi hand wins.
Betting
Fixed limit: bets and raises are set sizes. The small bet (the room's big blind) in the first two betting rounds, the big bet (double) in the last two. Up to a bet and three raises per round.
Which hand wins
Only cards of different suits and different ranks count (aces are low). Four such cards make a "badugi", which beats any three-card hand; three beat two, and so on. Between hands of the same size, the lowest highest card wins: A-2-3-4 of four suits is the best hand.
Tips
- Keep three low cards of different suits and draw one.
- A badugi with a king on top can still lose to any lower badugi.
