How to play H.O.R.S.E.

A mixed game: five games in turn, eight hands each. Hold'em, Omaha Hi-Lo, Razz, Seven Card Stud and Stud Eight-or-better.

A hand, step by step

  1. H: Fixed-Limit Hold'em. Blinds, two private cards, five shared cards.
  2. O: Fixed-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo. Four private cards, use exactly two with three from the board; high and low share the pot.
  3. R: Razz. Stud for the lowest hand; the highest face-up card brings it in.
  4. S: Seven Card Stud. Antes and a bring-in, seven cards, best five win.
  5. E: Stud Eight-or-better. Stud where the best high and the best 8-or-better low share the pot.
  6. After eight hands the table moves on to the next game; the current game shows on the felt and in the top bar.

Betting

Every game is fixed limit: the room's big blind is the small bet, and bets double in the later rounds. Stud games use an ante and a bring-in instead of blinds.

Which hand wins

Hi-Lo: the pot is split between the best high hand and the best low hand. A low needs five cards of different ranks, 8 or lower (aces count low; straights and flushes don't spoil a low). If nobody has a low, the high hand wins everything. One hand can win both halves ("scoop"). In Razz the lowest hand wins outright (aces low, straights and flushes don't count).

Tips

  • The best mixed-game players are solid in every game, not brilliant in one.
  • Read the rules sheet when the game changes.
