How to play Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo
Omaha where the best high hand and the best low hand share the pot.
A hand, step by step
- The two players to the left of the dealer button post the small and big blind.
- Everyone gets four private cards. Pre-flop betting starts with the player left of the big blind: fold, call or raise.
- The flop: three shared cards face up. Betting starts with the first player still in, left of the button.
- The turn: a fourth shared card, then a betting round.
- The river: a fifth shared card, then the last betting round.
- Showdown: exactly two of your cards and exactly three from the board, for the high and (separately) for the low. The best hand wins the pot; equal hands split it.
Betting
Pot limit: the most you can bet or raise is the size of the pot (counting your call first).
Which hand wins
Hi-Lo: the pot is split between the best high hand and the best low hand. A low needs five cards of different ranks, 8 or lower (aces count low; straights and flushes don't spoil a low). If nobody has a low, the high hand wins everything. One hand can win both halves ("scoop").
Tips
- A-2 is the best start for the low.
- Aim to win both halves: half a pot rarely pays for chasing.
