How to play Razz

Seven Card Stud played for the lowest hand. The best possible hand is 5-4-3-2-A ("the wheel").

A hand, step by step

  1. There is no button and no blinds: everyone pays a small ante before the deal.
  2. Third street: two cards face down and one face up. The highest face-up card (kings are highest, aces low; ties: spades first) pays the bring-in, a forced small bet; the next players can call it, complete it to a full small bet, or fold.
  3. Fourth, fifth and sixth street: one more card face up each time, then a betting round. From fourth street on, the lowest hand showing acts first.
  4. Seventh street: a last card face down, then the final betting round.
  5. Showdown: the lowest five cards from your seven win. (With eight players the deck can run short on seventh street; then one shared card is dealt face up for everyone.)

Betting

Fixed limit: bets and raises are set sizes. The small bet (the room's big blind) on third and fourth street, the big bet (double) from fifth street on. Up to a bet and three raises per round.

Which hand wins

Ace-to-five low: the lowest five different cards from your seven win. Aces are low, straights and flushes don't count against you, and pairs are bad. Hands are compared from the highest card down: 8-6-4-2-A beats 8-7-3-2-A.

Tips

  • Start with three different cards of 8 or lower.
  • A face-up king or queen is a reason to give up early.
