How to play Short Deck (6+)

Hold'em with the 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s taken out: 36 cards, bigger hands and lots of action.

A hand, step by step

  1. The two players to the left of the dealer button post the small and big blind.
  2. Everyone gets two private cards. Pre-flop betting starts with the player left of the big blind: fold, call or raise.
  3. The flop: three shared cards face up. Betting starts with the first player still in, left of the button.
  4. The turn: a fourth shared card, then a betting round.
  5. The river: a fifth shared card, then the last betting round.
  6. Showdown: any five of your two cards and the five on the board. The best hand wins the pot; equal hands split it.

Betting

No limit: bet any amount up to everything in front of you.

Which hand wins

Short Deck rankings: a flush beats a full house, three of a kind beats a straight, and A-6-7-8-9 counts as a straight. Otherwise the usual order.

Tips

  • Flushes are rarer with fewer cards of each suit, so they rank higher.
  • Pairs and draws improve far more often than in Hold'em.
