How to play Fixed-Limit Hold'em

Hold'em with set bet sizes, so every decision is about whether to bet, not how much.

A hand, step by step

  1. The two players to the left of the dealer button post the small and big blind. Heads-up, the button posts the small blind and acts first before the flop.
  2. Everyone gets two private cards. Pre-flop betting starts with the player left of the big blind: fold, call or raise.
  3. The flop: three shared cards face up. Betting starts with the first player still in, left of the button.
  4. The turn: a fourth shared card, then a betting round.
  5. The river: a fifth shared card, then the last betting round.
  6. Showdown: any five of your two cards and the five on the board. The best hand wins the pot; equal hands split it.

Betting

Fixed limit: the small bet (the big blind) pre-flop and on the flop, the big bet (double) on the turn and river. Up to a bet and three raises per round.

Which hand wins

Standard poker hands, best to worst: royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, pair, high card.

Tips

  • Bluffs work less often: a single bet rarely makes people fold.
  • Strong hands should bet and raise to build the pot.
