How to play 5-Card Draw
The home-game classic: five private cards, one chance to swap some, best poker hand wins.
A hand, step by step
- The two players to the left of the button post the small and big blind.
- Everyone gets 5 private cards. There are no shared cards. Betting starts left of the big blind.
- The draw: starting left of the button, each player throws away any number of cards (or none: "stand pat") and gets new ones. Everyone sees how many cards each player drew.
- A last betting round, then the showdown: the best poker hand wins.
Betting
No limit: bet any amount up to everything in front of you. After the draw, betting starts with the first player still in left of the button.
Which hand wins
Standard poker hands, best to worst: royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, pair, high card.
Tips
- Keep a pair and draw three; keep two pair and draw one.
- Watch how many cards others draw: standing pat often means a made hand.
