How to play Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo

Seven Card Stud where the best high hand and the best 8-or-better low share the pot ("Stud Eight or Better").

A hand, step by step

  1. There is no button and no blinds: everyone pays a small ante before the deal.
  2. Third street: two cards face down and one face up. The lowest face-up card (ties: clubs, then diamonds, hearts, spades) pays the bring-in, a forced small bet; the next players can call it, complete it to a full small bet, or fold.
  3. Fourth, fifth and sixth street: one more card face up each time, then a betting round. From fourth street on, the best hand showing acts first.
  4. Seventh street: a last card face down, then the final betting round.
  5. Showdown: the best high hand and the best low (each from any five of your seven) share the pot. (With eight players the deck can run short on seventh street; then one shared card is dealt face up for everyone.)

Betting

Fixed limit: bets and raises are set sizes. The small bet (the room's big blind) on third and fourth street, the big bet (double) from fifth street on. Up to a bet and three raises per round.

Which hand wins

Hi-Lo: the pot is split between the best high hand and the best low hand. A low needs five cards of different ranks, 8 or lower (aces count low; straights and flushes don't spoil a low). If nobody has a low, the high hand wins everything. One hand can win both halves ("scoop"). You can use different cards from your seven for the high and the low.

Tips

  • Three low cards of different ranks on third street are a strong start.
  • High-only hands need to be very strong to win a whole pot.
